Although it was a one sided affair in the first match where New Zealand outclassed Australia in first T20, winning the match by 53 runs. 2nd T20I was a high scoring joyride which had a nail biting finish. New Zealand held their nerves and won the second T20I match by just 4 runs in the end. New Zealand lead the series by 2-0 now.
2nd T20I match was a run fest. More than 400 runs scored in just 40 overs. and yet we had a close finish and got full value of our money. Second T20 was full of twists and turns and no one could pick the winner until last over of the match. Australian team was much more competitive than the previous game and at one point had it all covered until Neesham delivered a wonderful 18th over to make it harder for the Aussies to get over the line.
Martin Guptill who looked off color in the first match came out and smashed the ball to all parts in the 2nd T20I. He scored 97 runs with the help of 8 sixes and 6 fours but fell short of a T20 century by just 3 runs. Guptill batted brilliantly along side Kane Williamson who also scored a wonderful half century. J Neesham thunderous innings of 45 runs with the strike rate of 281 propelled New Zealand’s score above 200 mark. Neesham stuck 6 huge sixes and got his 45 on just 16 balls. New Zealand finished their batting on 219-7.
It was Hauge total to chase for Australian cricket team, who is already struggled with its batting in the previous game. Mathew Wade started off well with captain Aaron Finch. Finch played cautiously and could never really got going. Ish Sodhi took his wicket when he was batting on 12. Australia kept on losing wickets at crucial points and never really looked like chasing down the mammoth target until Marcus Stoinis came in. Stoinis smashed boundaries at will. He look in total control right from the start. He made his highest T20 score of 78 runs with a strike rate of 218. Stoinis stuck 5 sixes and 7 fours in his innings. His Partnership with Daniel Sams looked to steal the match from New Zealand at one point. Both lower order batsmen were playing with authority and boundaries were coming easily. Sams also scored his highest T20 score of 41 in the match.
It was Trent Boult‘s 18th over that brought New Zealand back in the game. Boult bowled excellent line and conceded just 6 runs in the 18th over which made the task a little more steep for Sams and Stoinis.
Australia needed 15 runs in the last over, J Neesham bowled the final over and got the wicket of Daniel Sams on the first ball. It was a full toss ball which was mistimed by Sams and landed in the safe hands of Phillips. This was probably the turning point of the match where Sams could not make full use of a juicy full toss presented to him. Sams wicket was followed by two more dot balls to Marcus Stoinis. Stoinis was successful in sending the 4th ball into orbit, hitting a wonderful six. Jimmy Neesham came right back at him on the very next ball when Stoinis mistimed and skyed one in the air which was caught easily by Tim Southee. Jhye Richardson stuck a boundry on the last ball but it was too little too late for the Aussies who lost the match by just 4 runs.
It was a thrilling match and Australian lower order kept New Zealand on their tows. A record Partnership between Stoinis and Sams could not bring Australia across the finish line but it was a great fight back from the Australian team hope we have a good match on our hands.
