Fakhar Zaman made the headlines yesterday for his blistering batting against the South African cricket team. He almost won it for Pakistan single handedly however, got runout when he was batting on 193 runs. Fakhar Zaman already has a double hundred in ODI cricket against Zimbabwe. Yesterday he was on his way to score his highest score but he was denied a double century amid some very bizarre situation. Quinton de Kock allegedly fooled Zaman and ran him out.
Zaman was batting brilliantly on 193 runs when he stoked one to the long off. He was quick on the first run and returned for the second. It was suppose to be a comfortable two when Quinton de Kock made a gesture with his hand suggesting that the throw from Aiden Markram at long off was to the non-striker end. Fakhar while running for the second run turned and look back to the non striker end but throw was at his end and he fell short of the popping crease. Quinton de Kock celebrated his mischief with a witty smile at Fakhar Zaman who looked shocked and disappointed.
Fakhar’s run out was a sad end to his brilliant innings where he brought his team to the verge of a record breaking win. But not to be, courtesy some cheeky work from the South African keeper. Quinton de kock is heavily criticized by the cricket fraternity for not showing sportsman spirit and condemned his action for being against the spirit of the game.
Fakhar today took the high road and has said that it was his fault that he didn’t look towards the ball and was watching the batmen running towards the non striker end. Fakhar does not hold Quinton de Kock accountable for anything and has expressed his regret for getting run out at a crucial time. South African captain Temba Bavuma said that Fakhar’s batting in 2nd ODI was the best innings he has ever seen. He appreciated Fakhar’s performance saying that he wasn’t expecting such a performance under the circumstances.
Many fans and cricket analysts have debated the incident. While some say that intentional misleading is against the laws of cricket, other say that act from Quinton de Kock was against the spirit of cricket.
Fakhar Zaman who was not able to deliver much in the recent times and looked off color in the first ODI, Started off his innings cautiously in the second ODI against South Africa. He played an anchor role upfront while Pakistan kept on loosing wickets from the other end. Fakhar held his ground and scored a wonderful century. And then added quick 50 runs to get pass 150 runs milestone. Fakhar had hit 18 fours and 10 sixes for his 193 runs. Despite Fakhar’s heroics Pakistan lost the high scoring game by 17 runs in the end.
Fakhar has also broken the record for the highest scorer in a run chase. Previously the Australian left hand all rounder Shane Watson held the record for most runs in an ODI chasing against Bangladesh. Watson had 185 runs record while Fakhar broke it in 2nd ODI against SA with his 193 runs knock.
