It was the first match of Indian Premier league and it could not be any better than a MI vs RCB match. Mighty Mumbai Indians were the hot favorites to win the inaugural match of IPl2021. However, Harshal Patel and AB de Villiers led the Royal Challengers win against Mumbai Indians. Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians is the defending champion and wanted to start of well for their journey to win a hattrick of IPL titles. However, Virat Kohli’s men had other ideas.
Mumbai Indians came out to bat first and their star studded batting lineup was exposed to some tight bowling from RCB right from the start. It was a comparatively slow start from the Rohit Sharma and Chris Lynn. Both batsmen weren’t given any easy boundaries and Rohit Sharma was the first casualty for Mumbai Indians when he got runout on 19 by an amazing throw of Virat Kohli. Chris Lynn played sensibly for his 49 but fell short of his well deserved 50 by just one run. Lynn got caught and bowled by Washington Sundar. S Yadav came in and played a hand but he too got out on 31 after facing 23 deliveries. In the end Mumbai could only score 159 runs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore started off the innings with Virat Kohli promoting himself to the top. Virat Kohli played a wonderful innings and the opening stand survived the powerplay with any loss of wickets. Glenn Maxwell came and played his shots and quickly got to 39 off just 28 balls. But the biggest contribution came from the South African veteran striker AB de Villiers who played a wonderful knock ensuring that he takes his side right to the finish line. He scored a match winning 48 runs off just 27 balls with the help of 4 fours and 2 sixes. ABD got runout just when 2 runs were needed. He was desperate to take the strike back but took a long route to return back for the second and a good throw from the deep landing into the gloves of Ishan Kishan who took the bails off. ABD tried to get to the crease with a big dive but some smart fielding from MI got him out just in time.
In the end scores were levelled at 19.5 overs and one run was needed for RCB to register their first win of the IPL Tournament. H Patel played a cut shot and scored a run on last ball to get his team to the finish line. Mumbai Indians played well but they were always short of 20-25 runs courtesy some fine bowling from Harshal Patel who got his career best fifer against MI.
