The fairytale of underdogs KXIP’s comeback is over. Kings XI Punjab was too close yet too far now.
Kings XI had their final group match against Chennai Super Kings, which was a must-win for them. However, things did not go exactly according to plan for Kings XI in their final quest of the IPL2020 group stage.
Chennai Super Kings, a team that was already out of the top 4 race, played for pride today. After winning the toss, They asked King XI Punjab to bat, which was an excellent decision considering the match’s outcome.
Top-heavy KXIP had to get a big knock from anyone within the top four. KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, and Nicholas Pooran were unsuccessful in contributing anything substantial and got out one after another. Kings XI could only manage to score 153 for the loss of six wickets in their quota of 20 overs.

On the other hand, CSK seems to have found its mojo in the last couple of matches was playing stress-free cricket and knew that they had nothing to lose. CSK bowlers capitalized on the opportunity at hand and bowled in the right areas for the most part. Lungi Ngidi was the most successful amongst the lot. At the same time, Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir took one scalp each.
KXIP posted 153 runs on the board, and it was looking a decent total until CSK came out to bat. They went cruise mode in the powerplay and did not lose a wicket. Faf du Plessis and the opener R Gaikwad smashed the ball to all parts of the park. Chris Jordan managed to get the only wicket of CSK (Faf du Plessis), and A Rayudu came out to bat and finished the job for Gaikwad. CSK chased down the total with ease and plenty of time to spare (1.1 over before). CSK won the match against KXIP by nine wickets.
CSK did manage to make a statement in the latter half of the tournament, giving their fans something to cheer. On the other hand, Kings XI was successful in bouncing back and creating an outside chance for them to qualify yet fell short at the time when it mattered the most.
Gayle magic could also not work in this final group match of IPL2020. Nicholas Pooran also fell early. Perhaps KXIP ran out of luck right at the end when they needed it the most. This is cricket!
However, it was an exciting run from both CSK and KXIP. They leave the season with chin up and fans happy with their competitive cricket. Full marks to Kings XI Punjab for their spirited comeback in the latter half of the tournament.
Kings XI Punjab’s aggressive style of play will surely be missed by fans now. But there will always be next season. Till then, let’s enjoy the next stage of the Indian Premier League 2020.
