Having moved to Western Australia from his native Melbourne, Ashton Agar made his state and international debuts in an incredible six-month period at the start of the 2013 season that propelled him to international stardom. Despite having played just a handful of first-class matches, 19-year-old Agar was picked for a spin-bowling internship on Australia’s tour of India before he made a shock debut in the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge. He made history with the bat instead of the ball, blasting 98 from No.11 to set a new Test record and set tongues wagging around the world. He was dropped after the second Test having taken just two wickets, but broke another record by becoming the first Australian teenage spinner to take a wicket at Test level. Returning to the relative anonymity of state cricket the following summer, Agar continued honing his skills under the watchful eye of Western Australia Coach Justin Langer. Under Langer’s guidance, the left-arm spinner would continue on to obtain multiple five-wicket hauls and centuries for the Warriors in the Sheffield Shield, while also pulling off some incredible catches for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.
Ashton Agar was the first player ever to score a half-century as a number eleven batsman on debut.
